October 27 Saturday – Isabel Lyon’s journal:

The King came down while Mrs. Crane & I were at breakfast to say that Mr. Leigh Hunt has invited him to go to Egypt for the winter—to spend his days & weeks on the Nile, & to take with him whomsoever he will. It will mean to take with him a stenographer & a biographer. He couldn’t take me because I’m needed at this base of action, although he says he wishes to take me. I’m so stunned.

The King went out to a wedding—Miss Kane’s wedding to Mr. Walker’s, at Tuxedo, & late this afternoon there came a telephone message to say that he would stay over night.

C.C. came back from Katonah, much depressed over the place & the great pathos of the situation [MTP TS 140-141].

Sam spent the night with Harry and Mary Rogers in Tuxedo Park, N.Y. He “sat up in the club & sipped whisky punches & told lies until half past one in the morning” [Oct. 29 to Jean]. Note: this was after he attended a wedding in Tuxedo—see IVL’s journal entry this date. Sam did not go to Hartford to speak at the Saturday Morning Club as reported by Fatout p. 676.
