August 22 Tuesday – Sam left Boston and returned to Dublin, N.H. [Aug. 21 to Rogers].

Isabel Lyon’s journal: “The children had a frantic game of ‘Wooly, Wooly Wolf,’ and stayed for dinner” [MTP TS 89]. Isabel Lyon’s journal # 2: “Today Dr. Henderson & Mr. Stewart [Stuart] Montgomery rode over from Chesham to call on Mr. Clemens” [MTP TS 26]. Note: Ernest Flagg Henderson (1860-1928), historian.

Richard Watson Gilder wrote from NYC to Sam. He had hoped to see William Travers Jerome and tell him of Sam’s good wishes but he left early last week and this week was taken up with the sad duties in connection with Willam E. Dodge’s death. “Old Home Week was great! As Clara must have told you” He now had a telephone in his house at Tyringham [MTP].

William Travers Jerome wrote to Sam. “I beg to acknowledge receipt of your kind note of August 15th. I thank you for your offer of assistance, which I shall not hesitate to avail myself of. / It is extremely grateful ot me to find the course I have taken approved of by so many people, whose good opinion I value highly. / Very sincerely yours …” [MTP].
