July 2 Monday – In Fairhaven, Mass. Sam finished his July 1 to Clara in Norfolk, Conn.

Monday morning. Your telegram [not extant] arrived an hour ago, at breakfast. Mr. Rogers decided as follows: I th must return to New York in the yacht on the 4 ; have some talks with Duneka for several days & get an understanding arranged, to be ratified or opposed by Harvey when he gets back from England the middle of the month; then return to Fairhaven in the yacht next Friday or Saturday & go thence to Dublin by rail. By rail it is only 4½ hours. With a power of love, dear heart, / Father [MTP].

Samuel S. McClure wrote from NYC to Sam. “My Beloved Friend! / this is not a business letter it is a love-letter. I read the wonderful chapters of your autobiography. All are wonderful, but the chapter about the dear dear child are the finest I have ever read in literature. I wept & loved & suffered & enjoyed.” McClure wished he could publish “this wonderful thing” in his magazine [MTP].

Elizabeth Jordan sent Sam a note. It is not extant but referred to in Sam’s July 6 reply [MTP].

July 2 ca. – Gertrude Natkin wrote to Sam, thanking him for Eve’s Diary, which he sent on June 30. She “laughed heartily” over the book. “How good of you to think of me and especially in such a sweet way as I prize very highly any of your works” [MTP].
