August – In Redding, Conn. Sam inscribed a photo of him seated (by Underwood & Underwood) with “best wishes” and the month/year to Jeannette Cholmeley-Jones [MTP].

Sam also inscribed a copy of JA to Mrs. Niehaus: “Truly Yours / Mark Twain / To Mrs. Niehaus, / the dear & valued friend of my daughter Jean—with my gratitude. / SL Clemens / August, 1908” [MTP].

Sam also inscribed a copy of JA to Etta R. Willson: “Truly Yours / Mark Twain / To / Miss Etta R. Wilson / with the grateful appreciation / of her kindnesses to / my daughter Jean, / S.L. Clemens / August, 1908” [MTP].

Sam also inscribed a copy of JA to Mrs. Frances Serrill Knowles: “Truly Yours Mark Twain / To Mrs. Frances Serrill Knowles with grateful appreciation of her kindnesses to my daughter Jean. S.L. Clemens”. Additionally inscribed by Jean Clemens: To Mrs. Knowles as the emblem of my affection Jean L. Clemens September 1908.” On Jan. 8, 1910, after Jean’s death, Mrs. Knowles wrote to Sam, “It is very pleasant to me, now, to know that I could be of so much help and comfort to her, the summer spent in Gloucester—we were fond of having her in our home, and as her daily companion” [ABE books, 19th Century Shop, # 1368098226, Oct. 22, 2009]. Note: source gives Mrs. Knowles husband as a physician in Gloucester, Mass. 

Sometime during the month a lawn party was held by the Mark Twain Library Association at Harry A. Lounsbury’s home. Another party at the same location had been held in July [MT Library minutes copied by Tenney, Nov. 15, 1981].
