August 26 Saturday – Isabel Lyon’s journal:
A letter from Charlotte Porter. Yesterday Col. Higginson asked me what news of the Dublin article and when I told him how I had heard from Miss Norma K. Bright who hopes I’ll write the article, I had to tell him that I feel my limitations so keenly and he said “Overcome them, your opportunity is here.” He is strong and the truth is in him. His book “Contemporaries” is delightful. Oh, such English, and appreciation of it in others [MTP TS 91]. Note: Norma Kathryn Bright (b. 1883), writer and poet for Book News.
Ralph W. Ashcroft wrote to Sam. “It is now up to Hammond to kick Wheeler out, or join with me in putting him behind bars. If he doesn’t do either, just watch me!” [MTP].
Bailey Millard for Cosmopolitan Magazine wrote to Sam, noting he had once been a contributor and seeking “something for us on a topic of your own choosing” in time for Christmas [MTP].
Harper’s Weekly ran “Mark Twain For Jerome,” p. 1238. Tenney: “A brief letter to the editor, concluding: ‘Out of respect for him, his morals, and his principles, I mean to vote for him only once on election-day, but if I were free from this restraint I would make it a hundred” [41].
