October 17 Tuesday – In Dublin, N.H. Sam wrote to John Y. MacAlister in London about the passing of Henry Irving: “All our people mourn him. He earned their love & esteem at his first coming & never lost it. He was endeared to me by a warm friendship of thirty-three years” [MTP]. Note: Sam also ordered a wreath sent to Irving’s funeral [Clara’s enclosure in Oct. 19 to MacAlister].

Isabel Lyon’s journal: “Never take anything for granted—” A pretty good watch word, and when C.C. reminded me that it was a good one, she didn’t know that I’d learned it when I was a pretty young “Freshman”. Oh, a very young one, that was nearly twenty five years ago, and I’m nothing but a rusty “Soph” now [MTP TS 108].

Isabel Lyon’s journal # 2: “ Sent back to the Library—/ Carlyle’s letters 1 vol / Huxley’s letters 1 vol / Darwin’s letters 2 vol” [MTP TS 31; Gribben 129, 176, 343].

Margaret E. Tyler for the Congo Reform Assoc. wrote to Sam. “Dr. Barbour desires me to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 16th inst., [not extant] with the clippings you returned, and to send you the enclosed [not extant] from the Norfolk Landmark” [MTP].
