October 21 Saturday – As planned (see Oct. 15 and Oct. 20 to Clara; Oct. 19 to MacAlister), Sam went to stay with the Pearmain’s Back Bay, 388 Bacon St., Boston. He was telegraphed there on Oct. 25 by Miller Reese Hutchinson [MTP].

Isabel Lyon’s journal: Mr. Clemens is going today. He is sitting in the living room now reading John Hay’s “Castillian Days”, and his trunk key is hung over his left thumb. There is a sad sense of departure everywhere, and a beginning of a desert. He will go to the Pearmains’ and tonight he’s going to a Symphony Concert. A line from Charlotte Porter says “it’s too good to be true” that he is going to speak a word for the Author’s Club.

When Mr. Clemens left today I drove over to Harrisville with him and got his ticket and things. It was a cold drive and Mr. Clemens made a muff of his black cape. At the station a man of a very good sort spoke to Mr. Clemens about the weather, and then said something …. [two pages torn out] [MTP TS 109]. Note: see also Gribben p.302.

See Insert: 388 Beacon St., Boston

Isabel Lyon’s Journal # 2: “Mr. Clemens went to Boston / Sent Adam’s Diary to C. Braton [sic] Sharpe Esq / London” [MTP TS 32].
