April 20 Friday – At 21 Fifth Ave, N.Y. Sam began a letter to Charlotte Teller Johnson that he finished on Apr. 21.

It was a charming surprise, dear my lady, but it was over before I could rouse my mind out of its 5-days’ drowse & take advantage of the opportunity to ask some leading questions about the present status of the Gorky situation & thrash that matter out to a finish. It vexes me to think the chance escaped. But I didn’t suspect that the time was so short. I know my own attitude— that is definite enough—but I wanted to get at yours.
