July 1 Sunday – In the evening in Fairhaven, Mass. Sam wrote to daughter Jean in Dublin, N.H.
Jean dear, I got up at 5 in the morning yesterday at Wuthering Heights [Rogers’ home] & after luncheon here I began to play billiards & kept it up until a quarter past 2 this morning. I got up at 8.30 & have been up & talking all day until now. I am not tired, but as I must rise at 7 tomorrow & go aboard the yacht I think I ought to go to bed, now. So I will say good night & send a hug & a kiss, dear heart, & seek my pillow [MTP].
Sam also began a letter to daughter Clara that he finished July 2.
Clara dear, I spent Wednesday & Thursday in New York, then slept on board the yacht & sailed for here early Friday morn.
I was expecting to return in the yacht to-night & be in New York a fortnight—till Col. Harvey’s return from England—but it isn’t necessary. On the way here Mr. Rogers & I discussed my matter, & concluded that he could perhaps take care of it better without me than with me. And so I expect to stay here a day or two longer, then go home to Dublin direct, by rail. I think I shall leave for home the 4 or 5 , when the Rogerses sail for New York [MTP].
