September 3 Monday – In Dublin, N.H. Sam sent a telegram to H.H. Rogers, in Fairhaven, Mass.: “God be thanked have found some of the things send another trunk this one leaked / Clemens.” [MTHHR 617].

Sam also wrote to an unidentified man, thanking him for his letter of Aug. 31 [MTP].

Clemens’ A.D. of this day included: The debate at the Dublin club house—Spontaneous oratory good scheme for ocean liner entertainments—Susy’s Biography—the sum in arithmetic —Sour Mash, & the other cats— A tribute to Gen. Grant [MTP Autodict2].

September 3, after – In Dublin, N.H. Sam wrote four one-line notes to H.H. Rogers [MTP]. Note: MTHHR 617n1 points out these exist in drafts and may not have been sent, but that “Clemens obviously understood the comic potential of telegraphic, unpunctuated prose.”

“I am afraid I cannot go, I have lost my father.”

Then,

“He was all I had.”

And then,

“Family prostrate.”

And finally,

“Do not send flowers send the money family will select flowers” [MTHHR 617n1].
