September 8 Saturday – In Dublin, N.H. Sam wrote instructions for Isabel Lyon to reply to Minnie Maddern Fiske. “Write to M . Fisk. & say it has been suggested that the people in Spain If they together ask that the book be dedicated to the Queen of Spain. It isn’t the least likely that it can be done—but we think that you will not be afraid to try” [MTP].

Lyon wrote again for Sam to George B. Harvey, but this, another attempt to “give him abuse” also unfinished:

HORSES TALE

The commendatory letters are flowing in & Mr. Clemens is I am obliged to answer & say that the understanding was to be immediately issued after its appearance in the magazine, & he does not know why this agreement has failed. I remember also that the illustrations were to have been in color; they are beautiful as they are, but they would  [MTP].

Fatout lists Sam at a “Speech-making Experiment” at the Village of Dublin, N.H. but gives no further citation [MT Speaking 676].  

Isabel Lyon’s journal: AB & I went to the Upper Pasture & he read to me a part of his ms. article on the Cartoonists. It begins with a nice sketch of Nast. It was very sweet in the upper pasture & I made some photographs “the full size of him” or as Joy says, Oh winsome little d [MTP TS 118] Note: Joy Paine, Albert’s youngest daughter.

September 8 ca. – Isabel V. Lyon replied for Sam to thank Miss Lucia Fessenden Gilbert for her letter of Aug. 31. “Horse’s Tale was written by request & solely for translation & publication in Spain by a noble company of ladies & gentlemen who propose to educate the children, not the grown people, & for that reason M . Clemens made it a story about a child as being better able to appeal” [MTP].
