July 17 Wednesday – Sam and Ashcroft were en route to New York on the S.S. Minnetonka. Sam came down with another case of bronchitis on this day [July 29 to Rogers].

John Briggs, Hannibal boyhood pal, died near New London, Mo. (1837-1907) see entries Vol 1.

Isabel Lyon’s journal: But this afternoon we came out to Tuxedo. The city has been boilingly hot, and we were so glad to get into a jigger and come out home here. We took the 3:53 train which arrives at 5:12 when all Tuxedo is spreading itself in all kinds of stylish rigs and mobiles. There are feathers waving and whips flourishing and long veils sweeping out in the breeze and men climbing into vehicles and showing off their fancy stockings and there is such an over burdenment of fashion about it all, that you long for a jog-trotting old mare the will carry you along a country road and through fields—country fields. Here is an artificial electric jigger—along artificial roads, climbing up to an artificial house over an artificial lake. But I’m glad we’re here and away from the city [MTP 84-85].

Evert Jansen Wendell (1860-1917), Harvard alumnus and collector of theater memorabilia wrote from NYC to Sam, enclosing a clipping (not in file) from a Syracuse paper [MTP]. Note: After his return on July 22 Sam and Lyon wrote on Wendell’s letter to an unidentified person.

John Mead Howells for Howells & Stokes wrote to Sam: “As by our conversation with Miss Lyon, we have ordered two circular Della Robbia pieces from Cantagalli in Florence…” [MTP]. Note: Copy of Howells & Stokes’ letter to Cantagalli in file.

Margaret C. Japp (Mrs. John Japp), Lord Mayor of Liverpool) wrote to Sam: “I cannot tell you how much we have been congratulated on the success of that evening, and of the pleasure your presence gave” [MTP].
