September 9 Monday – In Tuxedo Park, N.Y. Isabel V. Lyon wrote for Sam to Samuel E. Moffett. “Mr. Clemens asks me to thank you for sending to Washington for the lists for him.It was a pity you missed him so frequently, but we shall be back in New York about the first of November, not before I believe” [MTP].
Isabel Lyon’s journal: Tablecloth. / Colonel Harvey came again to spend a night and talk. But Dorothy was here and made an interruption to everything it seemed to me, who am now a little tired. But he got the King’s consent—his glad consent—to syndicate the autobiography in newspapers throughout the country and so the King will reach his “submerged clientele”. It will not bring him in a penny though. If anyone gets anything it will be the Harpers and they will not get much for newspapers do not pay much for matter—no matter how great—which has already been published. It will be a good advertisement for the King’s books though [MTP TS 101-102].
