August 19 Wednesday – Isabel Lyon’s journal:  “Mr. Lounsbury is ill, a fistula caused by a strain in moving Santa’s piano. AB and his nice old father came up for billiards. I entertained his nice old father and gave him tea on the loggia. He called the dear little cedar trees ‘volunteers’” [MTP: IVL TS 60]. Note: Paine’s father is shown as Samuel E. Paine in the Aug. 24 original guestbook entry.

William Webster Ellsworth sent Sam a letter addressed to”Subscribers to the Pond Fund,” about Major Pond’s son, James B. Pond, Jr. —his schooling, ill health and that no further need was advisable since his mother was dead and he could not return to college, due to several previous breakdowns there. Subscribers were listed and fund details given.

James B. Pond, Jr. [“Bim”] is a fine young fellow. He has an honorable ambition, a good mind, and I am sure we may feel  that we have done a splendid work in helping him on his way. He has been thoroughly appreciative of all that has been done for him. Without this fund he would have been obliged to go to work at thirteen years of age, and that without any training [MTP]. The letter was also signed by Robert Bridges, and William B. Howland, who found the account records correct.

August 19? Wednesday – In Redding, Conn. Sam replied to the Aug. 17 of George B. Harvey. “You can post them No, the doctors wont let me leave here until the first frost” [MTP].
