Frederick A. Duneka wrote from NYC to Sam. “It was very beautiful—our visit—just the happiest kind of times….even the cats seem to be dressed up for the occasion and to join in the welcome…. I am looking into the Mark Twain Spring Water scheme” [MTP].
Lillian Duneka (Mrs. Frederick A. Duneka) also wrote Sam a thank you note for their visit to Stormfield, “glad to have the little book with your dear inscription” [MTP].
Ida R. Larkin wrote to Lyon (though catalogued to Clemens) [MTP].
W.E. Raymond wrote from New Orleans to ask Sam for some information on a book of his sketches, asking where she might get two of the sketches now, “Rogers” and “Some Rambling Thoughts on an Idle Excursion”. He mentioned knowing Horace Bixby and Capt. J.B.Woods [MTP]. Note: “Ans. Nov. 16 MLH”; Clemens was a cub under Bixby on the New Falls City, captained by James B. Anne W. Stockbridge wrote to Isabel Lyon. “Do you have any recollection of some [illegible word] letters sent to Miss Stockbridge of Providence in regard to the California earthquake sufferers. Mr. Clemens used them at the dinner of the Associated Press in New York to illustrate ‘Simplified Spelling.’ …He showed so much interest in the letters in the beginning that I want him to see the book in its completed form” [MTP].
