June 19 Tuesday – Isabel Lyon’s journal:
10:30 p.m. & we are just home from the Handasyd Cabots where we 3 have been to supper & then to hear music later. Mr. Copeland was, there, & he is an exquisite pianist. Mr. Cabot played the cello beautifully & the evening was a delight. Besides ourselves & Mr. Copeland, were Dr. Russell, Mr. Brush, Dr. Porter, Mr. Joe Smith, Miss Putnam &—but that’s all. Mrs. Cabot is a very handsome creature; she was in a turquoise blue evening gown, she was a picture. The light fell in a great blast upon her cheek & bare shoulder, & she was lovely to look at.
It was the “deity” that formed the basis of today’s dictation & both Mr. Paine & Miss Hobby expected lightning to strike that room. Miss H. asked me later what I thought of Mr. Clemens’s views & I told her I was used to them & that I’d been an unbeliever for so many years that to me his views of God were a literary criticism & nothing more. My own belief in the eternal isn’t weakened any by his terrific words—neither is his own, I think [MTP TS 85- 86]. Note: the Cabot family was among Boston’s Brahmins, also called “First families of Boston,” descended from John Cabot b. 1680 who immigrated to Salem, Mass. in 1700. E. Handasyd Cabot (b. ca 1869), and Elise P. Cabot (Mrs. E. Handasyd Cabot) .

S.G. Niles wrote from Nashville, Tenn. wanting to know if Clemens’ articles on Christian Science had ever been published in book form [MTP].
