Clemens praised Baedeker's Italy for “curious & useful details” about Lake Como on 24 September 1878 (NB 16, N&J 2: 193). He mentioned the guidebook in May 1892 (NB 32, TS p. 5). Later he disparaged its praise of the architecture and decorations of the Villa di Quarto near Florence in a January 1904 Autobiographical Dictation (AutoMT 1: 230).
