Fremont Springs Station

Note: Point plotted on the Oregon Trail Road between Sutherland and Hershey

This site is possibly about one and one-half miles south of Hershey, Nebraska. Sources generally agree on its identity and location as a home station and stage stop. However, Paul and Helen Henderson placed the station approximately five and one-half mile southeast of Sutherland in Lincoln County. In late 1860, the English traveler Richard F. Burton described the station's unique architecture in this way: "The building is of a style peculiar to the south, especially Florida—two huts connected by a roofwork of thatched timber, which acts as the best and coolest of verandahs." I received this email from Michael England, in a contact message on my personal website: April 1, 2025:

Your article mentions the location of the Fremont Springs pony express station as being between Sutherland and Hershey. Nebraska.  This is incorrect.  The land where the pony express station was located was actually owned by my grandfather, Franklin A. England, after the service ended.  I am not sure when he first obtained the property, but the first document I know of was dated 1873, he was the first private owner of this property.  My grandfather passed before I  was born, but the land was operated as a farming/ranching partnership by my father, Robert England and his brothers Alfred and Merlin. I continued to operate the ranch until 1984, when I became a victim of the Farm Crisis.  I know the station was not further west because its namesake Fremont Sprng originates as a freshwater spring arising out of the ground only about 1 mile west of the station.  Although the actual station was no longer present when I was born in 1952, during my childhood my family often spent our spare time searching the plot of land where the station had been located for items like horse and oxen shoes, bullets, tie-out stakes and other collectibles.  If you would like to learn more, I would be happy to help you find the exact location and other information. The location is roughly 1 mile south of the first I-80 overpass east of the Hershey interchange, between Hershey and North Platte.  When I was young, I had several spots on the spring where I went duck hunting every fall.
