The Gastern Valley , also known as the Gasterental or (according to the Swiss national map) the Gasteretal , is a valley near Kandersteg in the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland . The Kander River flows through it. The upper valley basin is about 1,600 m high, and the valley outlet is about 1,350 m high. The valley is only inhabited during the summer months.
In the Kandersteg dialect, "gasteren " means "to stay overnight." Selden, the rear part of the valley, was once inhabited year-round; two inns offered accommodation and meals to travelers over the Lötschen Pass .
