May 27 Sunday – Isabel Lyon’s journal:

Two hours of this morning Mr. Clemens called me & had me make notes. He planned out a course of action to be followed out in his scheme of breaking away from the Harper Contract & selling 50000 words to McClure for $50000.00 to be syndicated. He wants it to go into the papers—even into the Hearst papers—to reach his “submerged clientele”—but I’m not altogether sure about the wisdom of that. I think he is too great for that. This afternoon he read more auto-ms. & after he went to rest Mr. Brush & Gerome came in from a heavy rain. They stayed for dinner where Mr. Clemens reminisced about the “Innocents Abroad” days, the days spent in the Holy Land [MTP TS 74].
