Ka Moi

The King

Schooners left Honolulu for Maui almost daily, and there is nothing to show exactly on which Mark Twain sailed, as there is to show how and when he returned, and how and when he sailed for and returned from Hawaii, the third and last and largest island visited. Some writers state erroneously that he went to Hawaii before going to Maui and some, putting the visit to Maui first, state that he went on from there to Hawaii. Mark Twain himself, five years later, trusting to a faulty memory, in 2 Roughing It, 311, put the trip to Hawaii before that to Maui, although at the time of his visit he was usually fairly accurate in his letters to the Union and to his folks, It may as well be added here that often not only have writers gone awry on dates and sequences, but they have made his stays in many places so long that he could not possibly have got through in the four months of his visit.
