August 12 Monday – The men left Baden Baden by rail and arrived at Lucerne, Switzerland where they joined Livy, the children and the rest of the party who had been there a few days.

The German railway, Mannheim-Karlsruhe-Basel railway, and the Swiss, Swiss Central Railway.

..., Livy, her daughters, and Rosina Hay, accompanied by Georg Burk, enjoyed an excursion of their own. They left Baden-Baden on August 8 and traveled across the Rhine to Strasburg “to see the Cathedral,” once the tallest building in the world and a consummate example of late Gothic architecture. They then headed south and east to Zurich and Lucerne, where they registered at the Schweizerhof on August 11 and where Sam and Twichell joined them late the next evening.
