On the main street, opposite the tower of the Church of the Holy Spirit, stands the House of the Knight St. George. Built in 1592 by the Huguenot cloth merchant Charles Bélier, it resembles the gabled house that was common in Heidelberg before the city was destroyed.
The house takes its name from the bust of an armored knight enthroned above the gable. The owner and his wife are depicted in the right parapet of the second floor. One of the few town houses to remain virtually undamaged, it served as the town hall from 1693 to 1703. Except for that decade, it served as a hotel and inn since the end of the Thirty Years' War.
