This is the train route Sam would likely have followed in 1856, from Quincy to Cincinnati:  Quincy and Chicago, 20.7 miles, from Quincy to Camp Point; Quincy and Toledo, 32 miles to Meredosia;  Great Western, 54 miles to Springfield;  St. Louis, Alton and Chicago, 188 miles to Chicago;  Galena and Chicago Union. 2 miles to the LaSalle Street Station;  Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago, 60 miles to Hanna;  Louisville, New Albany and Chicago, 70 miles to the junction at Wanatah;  Lafayette and Indianapolis, 65 miles to Indianapolis,  the Terre Haute and Richmond, 1.14 miles long crosses the White River;  Indianapolis and Cincinnati, 87 miles to state border;  Ohio and Mississippi, 20 miles from border to Cincinnati.
