From Milan to Genoa

Railway from Milan to Genoa in 43/1- 51/2 hrs. ; fares 17 fr. 25 , 12 fr.  25 , 8 fr . 75 c . An early train should be selected in order that nothing of the remarkable scenery of the Apennines be lost. Those who desire to visit both the Certosa and Pavia from Milan are recommended to take a return - ticket to Pavia , inspect the town ( in about 3 hrs. ) , and then drive (one-horse carriage 4 - 5 fr.) to the Certosa , a pleasant journey of 50 min ., skirting a canal.  stat. Certosa a walk A visit to the Certosa occupies 112 - 2 hrs. ; thence to of 114 hr . ( small cafĂ© at the station ) .

The train to Pavia at first follows the Piacenza line , then diverges to the S . W . before stat. Rogoredo is reached .  The high road, which in a straight direction follows the Naviglio di Pavia ( p . 113) , a broad canal, lies on the r. Below Pavia , near the union of this canal with the Ticino , there are some remarkable locks. The district is flat ; underwood and rice - fields are traversed alternately. On the high road , to the w . of the railway , is situated Binasco , a small town with an ancient castle , in which , on Sept.  13th , 1418 , the jealous and tyrannical Duke Fil. Maria Visconti caused his noble and innocent consort Beatrice di Tenda ( p . 107) to be executed .
