The area in which Bloomington is situated was previously inhabited by the Delaware, Potawatomi, Miami, and Eel River Miami.
Bloomington was platted in 1818. A post office has been in operation at Bloomington since 1825. Bloomington was incorporated in 1827.

Budapest, Hungary
Mark Twain wrote about Hungary in his essay Stirring Times in Austria, published in Harper's Magazine, March 1898. He spent a week in Budapest in March of 1899 and gave a speech in honor of the jubilee celebration of the liberation of the Hungarian press, published as "German for the Hungarians."
Buffalo, NY
August 23, 1853 Sam Clemens first passed through Buffalo on his way to New York.
August of 1869, he had bought into the Buffalo Express and became a resident of the city. He lived in an East Swan Street boardinghouse near the newspaper, thenm went on a lecture tour. Returning to Buffalo as a married man, he moved into a furnished house at 472 Delaware Avenue.

Chelsea, Massachusetts

Cincinnati, Ohio
Sam Clemens arrived in Cincinnati from Keokuk, Iowa in October of 1856. He worked as a printer for T. Wrightson & Co. at 167 Walnut St. He stayed at a boardinghouse at 76 Walnut St. He wrote two letters to the Keokuk Post using the name Thomas Jefferson Snodgrass. On February 16, 1857, he boarded the Paul Jones and left the city for New Orleans, where he became Bixby's cub.
He returned to the city as part of the Twain-Cable Tour, January 1885.
Clinton, Iowa
An announcement came in 1855 that a railroad was to cross the Mississippi, South of Lyons, at Little Rock Island. At the same time, the Iowa Land Company (ILC) was formed. The ILC purchased Bartlett's tract on the Iowa shore opposite Little Rock Island. Concurrently, the Chicago, Iowa, & Nebraska (C&IN) Railroad was formed, with the express intent of crossing the Mississippi River at Clinton.
