September 19 Friday – In York Harbor, Maine Sam wrote to Frederick A. Duneka of Harper’s.
I am glad you like the Heaven or Hell. I mailed the Belated Russian Passport this morning. To-day I have written a little short dab of sarcassum—“Concerning ‘Martyrs’ Day’”—& shall mail it when it is type-wrote. To-morrow or next day I reckon [MTP]. Note: “Concerning ‘Martyrs’ Day’” which Sam wrote for Harper’s Weekly, was not published during his lifetime. It was included in Mark Twain’s Fables of Man (1972) p.303-7.
Sam added a PS to his Sept. 18 to H.H. Rogers: “I was so counting upon the yacht, & now it is all spoiled” [MTP].
