October 25 Thursday – At 21 Fifth Ave, N.Y. Sam wrote to Mary B. Rogers now in Tuxedo Park, N.Y.

You shouldn’t come to town & not come to see a body. However, I wasn’t at home to-day. I was taking exercise—on foot. Daily! I walk to the Waldorf, sit down a spell & talk to the people, then walk back to 21. To-day I meant to spread clear out to the new Piazza hotel, but at 45 street Miss Margorie Clinton & a young Mrs. Rogers came along in a mobile and gave me a lift down to Dr. Rice’s, where I had an errand. I am waiting till Weston gets to Chicago, then I shall walk out to San Francisco & make him ashamed. He is vain of his age; whereas he is but a lad. I was already 3 years old when he was born.
Do please try and smooth it over with young Miss Walker for me; I am a little afraid to try it myself just yet. I engaged her company for the Virginia reel, then ran off to New York the day before the ball. You can tell her I had to go because I thought it was going to rain. She is very young & will not know but that’s so.

This mention of Margery predates the earliest known correspondence between Sam and Margery, ca. Jan. 1, 1907; it may be the day of their first meeting.

Ralph W. Ashcroft wrote to Charles S. Fairchild that Clemens could not take advantage of Fairchild’s offer to sell some of his personal stock in the Mechanical Cash Register Co. and in fact would like to sell some of his holdings to place elsewhere. Ashcroft sent Sam a copy [MTP].
George B. Harvey and Clarence Mackay sent an engraved invitation to Sam to meet T.P. O’Connor, MP at a dinner at the Metropolitan Club on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 8 p.m. [MTP].
October 25, after – Charlotte Teller Johnson wrote to Sam. “fortunately Mr Frohman has been out of town and so I have not used the card you sent me from Dublin. I shall simply go to his office directly when I decide that there is reason for my meeting him personally. / Sincerely… [MTP]. Note: Sam’s card is in the file; written on it, “Dear Charles Frohman: / Will you do me the personal favor to see the bearer of this on business? Ys ever/ Mark Twain”
