February 4 Thursday — In Redding, Conn. Sam wrote a postcard (with a picture of Stormfield) to Ruth Woods in Philippi, W. Va.: “Thank you ever so much, dear Ruth, for suggesting it, but the truth is I am much too old & indolent to take up writing again. / Sincerely your friend / SL. Clemens” [MTP].

Henry M. Chase wrote to Sam enclosing “a memento of the dinner given to the Board of Managers of the Boston Dispensary...it contains much of interest in the life of the institution.” No “memento” is in the file [MTP].

Margaret Chenoweth wrote from Birmingham, Ala. to congratulate Sam on his 73 birthday and to repeat how proud she was of the card he’d sent in 1908. “Your little admirer...” [MTP].

Dodge & Morrison, Architects, NYC wrote to solicit Sam as president of the Children’s Theatre for them to present plans for the new building [MTP].

Edward Freiborger for The Friars, NYC wrote to Sam, remembering his “Babies” speech in Chicago in 1879. He was now devoted to drama in NYC. He asked if Sam could donate a set of his books for the Friars’ library [MTP].

Russell & Erwin Mfg. per W. Donaldson wrote to poke Sam for $862.90 on their bill of Dec.2 “for Hardware furnished at your house at Redding...” [MTP].
