June 23, 1904 Thursday

June 23 Thursday – At the Hotel de Ville in Florence Sam sent the same “TO WHOM THIS SHALL COME” note to Andrew Chatto in London, and added, “Good-bye, dear Chatto friends of these many years, we may meet no more” [MTP]. Note: postmarked June 23.

Sam’s notebook: “The finishing of the mourning-gowns is progressing. / Asked Dr. Kirch for his last 28 days’ bill. It is atrocious—2,800 francs. I asked him to sue for this robbery. / Wrote a letter & gave it to Sebastiano Cecchi of Haskard & Co Ltd & asked him to show it to Kirch” [NB 47 TS 13]. Note: Cecchi was an attorney in Florence. The letter is not extant.

The New York Times, p.9 announced that Mark Twain had leased Richard Watson Gilder’s “Four Brook Farm” in Tyringham, Mass. (near Lee) and would arrive next week to spend a quiet summer after the death of his wife.
