June 21 Wednesday – In London, England, Sam wrote to an unidentified man that he would “look in,” if he could “manage it before leaving town” [MTP].

Sam’s notebook entries: “Wed. 21 Café Monico, Shaftsbury Ave. 7 for 7.30 / Henry Irving, 11.15 Lyceum” [NB 40 TS 56]. “June 21, made Hon. Vis. Member for one month of the Sesame Club, 29 Dover st. Piccadilly, W., through John Ridgely Carter, of our Embassy (from M.C. Plowden, Secy” [NB 40 TS 57]. Note: John Ridgely Carter (1864-1944). The Sesame Club admitted both genders. Fatout lists two dinners, one “unidentified, London, Speech or Story,” (likely the Café Monico, a Sesame Club event,) and the later “Irving Dinner” at the Lyceum [MT Speaking 666].
