Miss Gertrude Bloede of Brooklyn wrote compliments of Twain’s “Sitting in Darkness” article [MTP]. Note: Sam wrote on the env. “Add a line thanks for fine poetry”

George P. Davis of Brookline, Mass. wrote against Sam’s article “Sitting in Darkness” and suggesting Sam “contribute to the American Board of Missions, say a thousand dollars or so, to help Dr Ament, and other faithful missionaries in their work, not as any compensation for the wrong you may have done, but as a token of your deep interest in the work” [MTP].

Emma White, Sam’s cousin, wrote from Kansas City, Mo. to Sam, seeking genealogical information; she’d neglected to write down the name Sam had given her to write for the information [MTP]. Note: any prior letter to or from Sam by Emma White is not extant.
