21 Fifth Ave - Day By Day

November 29, 1904 Tuesday – On or about this day Sam moved into his new home at 21 Fifth Avenue in N.Y.C. and daughter Jean arrived as well.

May 5, 1905  Friday – Sam left NYC with H.H. Rogers on the yacht Kanawha for Fairhaven, Mass. [Lyon’s journal #2 TS 17; Lyon’s journal May 7]. Note: Due to learning of Clara’s impending appendectomy, Sam may have stayed in NYC. Lyon wrote that he was in Fairhaven. If he did not go with Rogers, it is then evident that Lyon did not know this. 

May 18, 1905:  Isabel Lyon’s journal # 2: “Today Mr. Clemens arrived. Jean & Patrick rode over to Harrisville to meet him. The orchestrelle came too” [MTP TS 19].  Twain had spent the previous day in Boston.

October 21, 1905:  Sam departs Dublin for Boston, by November 7th, he was back home in New York City.

January 25 - 30, 1906 - Washington D.C.

February 26, 1906:  Hartford, CT and returned to New York March 1st.

May 14, 1906:  Sam travels to Boston, en route to Dublin for the summer, leaving Boston on the 15th. by train to Dublin.

October 17, 1906:  Returns to NYC from Dublin.

January 2, 1907: Sam, Joe Twichell, and Isabel Lyon sailed on the S.S. Bermudian for Bermuda for a “flying trip,” a three-day stay.  They returned on the 9th.

March 16, 1907:  Depart for Bermuda, returned home March 21st.

April 2, 1907:  Sam makes his final trip to Elmira, NY, returning to NY City April 4th.

May 4, 1907:  Sam moved into the William Voss house in Tuxedo Park, N.Y.

June 8, 1907:  Sam leaves for England.  Arrives June 18.

October 24, 1907:  Returns from Tuxedo Park to New York City

January 25, 1908: Departs for Bermuda, returns February 6.

February 22, 1908:  Departs for Bermuda, returns April 13.

June 18, 1908:  Moves into Stormfield.

Dublin, NH - Summer of 1905

The Clemens household, sans Clara, moved to Dublin May 5.  Sam may or may not have gone to Fairhaven with Rogers.  He arrived in Dublin May 18 from Boston via Harrisville.

“The nearest railway station is distant something like an hour’s drive; it is three hours from there to Boston, over a branch line. You can go to New York in six hours per branch line if you change every time you think of it, but it is better to go to Boston and stop over and take the trunk line next day; then you do not get lost.

Sam wrote to Frederick A. Duneka of Harper’s:

Dublin, NH - Summer of 1906

Sam departed Dublin June 26 for Boston and New York City.  He joined H. H. Rogers on the Kanawah and sailed to Fairhaven on the 29th.  They return to New York City on  July 4th.

Evidently, Sam made several trips back and forth to Fairhaven with Rogers but returned to Dublin on the 25th of July.

Actually, he spend quite a bit of time with Rogers, in his New York offices and in Fairhaven, travelling on Rogers' yacht, the Kanawah.

Fourth Trip to Bermuda: Saturday, March 16 to Tuesday, March 19, 1907
March 16 Saturday – Sam, Isabel Lyon, and the “pretty young girl” Paddy Madden left on the Bermudian. The trip would be a five-day getaway for Sam, who was suffering from gout, but all but one day would be on board the ship. Also on the outward voyage Charles W. Eliot (1834-1926), president of Harvard, and Thomas D. Peck, woolen manufacturer from Pittsfield, Mass., were on board. Sam and Peck conducted a lottery on the ship to benefit the Cottage Hospital in Bermuda, the only civilian one there [D. Hoffman 78-9].

Tuxedo Park, Summer of 1907

Sam's summer residence for 1907; from May 14 to June 7th, when he travels to England to receive an Honorary Doctorate from Oxford; returning again on July 23rd.

September 21st:  Sam departed Tuxedo Park for New York City and boarded the Kanawha, cruising to Jamestown for the Ter-Centennial (300th anniversary of the founding of the colony) and the Robert Fulton Day Ceremonies.  He returned to Tuxedo Park September 26th.

October 24th:  Same returns to his New York City Address.

An Honorary Degree from Oxford

Meantime, [I have been invited by Oxford University to receive an honorary degree on the 26th of June, and shall sail on that quest on the 8th]. I have made no effort to conceal the fact that I am vain of this distinction.
