October 25 Sunday – Isabel Lyon’s journal:  We all had tea with Mother this afternoon, and after we got back the King read the copyright problem he has been working on. He was lying in wait for Benar and me, and Benar flew upstairs with his white legs, not waiting for me to say that the King was waiting in the library. These impulsive creatures are so much the best in the world, and the best example of it is the King, the beautiful King [MTP: IVL TS 72].

C.P. Jones, M.D. wrote from Vineland, NJ, having just read FE about the endurance of pain by aboriginals. Jones had recently sent his book, Quick My Rifle, which he thought his secretary had not allowed Clemens to read. The book contained a chapter, “The Torture Chamber” describing “elegantly the practices of the Tibetan Lamas.” He suggested that when Lyon was out for a walk that Clemens “sneak” the book out and read it [MTP]. Note: “Ans. Oct 28 / 08 MLH”; Gribben 358 lists the book with Jones and A.L. Sykes as co-authors (1907).

Hazel Stourton for the Working Girls’ Assoc. wrote from Evansville, Ind. to ask Sam to donate his handkerchief to their Assoc [MTP]. Note: Ans. Oct 27 / 08 MLH; and, “In the country where it is not easy to buy handkerchiefs, but is glad to send an autograph.”

George L. Smith of YMCA Canal Zone, wrote sending his autograph in a rather spoof of a letter and not directly asking for Clemens’ autograph [MTP]. Note: “Autgr sent Nov. 6. MLH”.
