July 11 Wednesday – Isabel Lyon’s journal (Dublin, N.H.):

The fight with Harpers is keeping Mr. Clemens on & on in the city. But I know that he likes it there. He writes that he spends his nights on Mr. Rogers’s yacht. They go abroad early; pull out about 12 miles down the bay—or sound—& so enjoy cool silent nights. This morning I had a sense of anxiety weighing upon me; so great a one that I telephoned down to the city to ask Katie if all was going well with Mr. Clemens. She said that it was—all of it going well. His health is good & his spirits too—so that means that he is happy [MTP TS 94-95].
