December 22 Thursday – Orion and Mollie Clemens wrote to Sam and Olivia. Orion: thanks for the Christmas present, Ma will buy something nice with her present; comments and wonderings about the typesetter. Mollie: thanking for the present sent — where would they be without their help? She couldn’t answer why Sam would help her “poor old father,” who was “comfortably fixed as can be” now. “It is 23 years since we had our Jennie with us on a Christmas, but some how she is in my mind more than usual” [MTP].

Elizabeth Bacon Custer wrote thanking Sam for sending her Gen. McClellan’s book, a man who was “the idol of my husband’s boyhood” [MTP].
