January 17 Monday — In Redding, Conn. Sam wrote to the New York Telephone Co. requesting telephone books. His letter is not extant but referred to in the Company’s Jan. 20 reply; since Paine wrote the below for Clemens, it’s probable he also wrote this letter [MTP].
Albert B. Paine wrote for Sam to Mrs. Emma Gertrude Quick.
Dear Mrs. Quick: / Mr. Clemens sailed for Bermuda unexpectedly on the 5th, and among his correspondence I found a letter from you which he may or may not have answered, At all events I am sure that he would wish me to thank you for your kind sympathy, and to say that by-and-by, when he returns, he will hope to have a visit from Dorothy and yourself. He went away in good spirits, feeling very well, but stunned by the sorrow that has so recently come to this beautiful house. We hardly look for him before pleasant weather.
With kindest regards to Dorothy and yourself, I am, / Very sincerely yours, / Albert B. Paine [MTP].
