Albert Bigelow Paine wrote from Redding to Clemens:
“I held my letter for the statement, which Mrs Paine will have copied presently. The ice & coal hauling ran up to a high figure, owing to the fearful condition of the roads, but the sum-total of expense, this time is less than I expected.’ Paine reported that by shutting off some radiators the house temperature was now more even and with some savings of coal [MTP].
