November 15 Monday — In Redding, Conn. Albert B. Paine wrote for Sam to prof. Archibald Henderson at Univ. N. Carolina, Chapel Hill.
Dear Professor Henderson, / Your article in the Deutsch'e Revue pleases Mr. Clemens very much indeed, and with his favorable opinion all in this house concur. Miss Jean Clemens who is very proficient in the German, is especially delighted with your facility in that language.
Very sincerely yours, / Albert Bigelow Paine [MTP].
The New York Times, p. 7, “Dinner to Col. Heistand” announced that Mark Twain would speak on Thursday, Nov. 18. Clemens did not go to New York on this week and did not speak at the dinner.
Margery Hamilton Clinton wrote to Sam. Only the envelope survives, It was sold on History For Sale, Sept. 13, 2009, document #3344, Evidently Margery simply addressed the letter to “Samuel L. Clemens, Stormfield, Conn.” Sam then crossed out Stormfield and wrote, “Redding Ridge” adding “Here’s some more inefficient plumbing, you see. There ain’t no P.O. at Stormfield.” He then sent it back to Margery with his Nov. 17 note. Clinton then mentioned the mistake in her Nov. 30 to Clemens (auction source credits Robert Hirst, MTP for this information.)
