September 25  Announcement

September 25 after — In Redding, Conn. Sam wrote to the Board of Directors of the Mark Twain Co.

To the Board of Directors
of the Mark Twain Company.
Gentlemen: The purpose of this communication is to suggest that Mr. Ashcroft be asked to resign his position as Manager of the Company & cancel & make void his contract, upon the ground that he is not a fit person to to serve that office. My reasons are many, but I will state only one of them at present. Others will follow if required.

In Norfolk, Virginia, in the early days of April last, he procured a sum of money from me on false pretenses, by methods distinctly criminal in their character. He assisted his process by lies of his own, & by beguiling another man, though threats & persuasions, to lie for him. I have the evidence, & am ready to furnish it to you in detail.

At the time that he was guilty of this conduct he was under contract to conduct & watch over all my private business affairs for me—a contract upon which the ink was hardly as yet dry.

Respectfully submitted,

SL. Clemens, President.
