September 9, 1909 Thursday

September 9 Thursday — In Redding, Conn. Albert B. Paine wrote for Sam to Archibald Henderson.

My Dear Sir, / I have presented the matter of the pictures to Mr. Clemens. He never understood it before. The photograph entitled “Contentment” is here, autographed and neatly framed, and Mr. Clemens says we may send it to you if you would like to have it. Or, he will autograph the new picture you mention—both pictures—and the reprint of the Harper article. We find only one copy of the last-named here, and it is inscribed to Mr. Clemens himself, by you. What became of the other copy we cannot tell. In case you should send another copy and the pictures, you would better address them direct to me. I am attending to some business affairs for Mr. Clemens, and I should be pleased to give this matter my personal attention. / Very sincerely yours, / Albert B. Paine [MTP].

Sam noted in his after Sept. 25, 1909 letter that on this day, though he put a question mark by the date, “$18,000 guarantee for 5 years. New $25-edition.”

William H. Thompson for the Alabama Soldiers’ Home wrote to ask for some of Twain’s books for their library [MTP].

J.W. Walter for the Plasmon Syndicate, London wrote to Sam that in reply to Paine’s letter of Aug. 30 they were “handing you herewith a copy of our last Report and Balance Sheet” [MTP].
