October 31 Tuesday – At the Pearmain’s house, 388 Beacon St., Boston, Sam wrote to Frederick A. Duneka: “I was interrupted, & didn’t half read the proof of the Horse’s Tale. Will you have it done carefully? Jean goes to New York to-morrow from Dublin—I follow in a few days” [MTP]
Milton Spinney wrote from Popham Beach, Maine to Sam. Spinney had been a Maine pilot. Another pilot had told Spinney he had taken the Kanawha up the Kennebec river as far as Bath, Maine and shook hands with Clemens without realizing who he was. Spinney’s letter was a fan letter, appreciative of the way Sam’s writings had lifted the world [MTP].
Sam inscribed his copy of Sea and Shore: A Collection of Poems by Mrs. Martha Le Baron Goddard (1829-1888): “SL. Clemens / from / Thomas Bailey Aldrich. / Oct. 31, 1905” [Gribben 262].
