August 18 Saturday – Isabel Lyon’s journal:

“Whatever is right. Sometimes it’s just right.” AB said it today when we sat on a big stone up on the King’s hilltop [in Redding]. Such a hilltop. Such a King. Such an ABP. They’re almost too “just right”. His house is darling & I had such a good time. He & Joy met me at Branchville. We jumped into the little carriage, AB picked up the reigns [sic] with a great flourish, but the horse didn’t move. There was surprise on AB’s face & a chuckle from a farmer standing near—the horse was still hitched to a great big stone hitching post. We drove through a beautiful rough scrubby road & AB is such a reckless driver, such a dear wild Irishman of a man. He goes like hell & puts all the confidence in the horse, because I don’t think he could put any in himself. We went all over the property, through the old farm house & away up over the hilltop. It is very beautiful [MTP TS 108]. Note: Joy Paine, Albert Bigelow and Dora Paine’s youngest daughter.

Yours of no date rec. Am not much disappointed that you condemn the article. I had sense enough to see for myself, that it was a crude affair, and sent it to you for approval, or condemnation, and am glad you condemn it, for the reason that you saw something that would make you rediculous, [sic] and all the money in North America wouldnt tempt me to have it published for that reason alone [MTP].
