October 17 Sunday — The New York Times, p. 1 reported on the condition of Ossip Gabrilowitsch:

TO OPERATE ON GABRILOWITCH

Mark Twain’s Son-in-Law HasAppendicitis—Cancels Sailing.

Ossip Gabrilowitch [sic], the pianist, who recently was married to Miss Clemens, daughter of Mark Twain, did not sail with his bride yesterday on the steamship Kaiserin Auguste Victoria. He visited the vessel just before she sailed to get his mail. He found it inconvenient to sail at this time. Mr. Gabrilowitch added that he expected to be operated on next Monday for appendicitis,
