Arthur Conan Doyle wrote from London to Sam.

I know that you feel as I do about the Congo. You have magnificently proved it in your book.

I am sending you mine “The Crime of the Congo” which brings the facts up to date.

It is written in the hope of making the people of England (and of America also) understand that they are themselves blood guilty if they do not interfere to control that which they have themselves helped to form. If Diplomacy fails then it must be force. How great to see the two English-speaking nations shoulder to shoulder in protecting the helpless.

If you could spare me a line, just to say that a great American sees it from the same standpoint it would indeed help us here in our struggle / With all affection & respect ... [MTP].

John Whitehead wrote from Surrey, England to send a poem to Sam, as he was doing to all the great men of the world. Sam had received Whitehead’s book at Brown’s Hotel in 1907 [MTP]. Note: not in Gribben.
