Agnes L. Brown wrote from Ottawa, Ontario Canada to Sam appreciating his article on Howells. She sent Sam two books, The Cape Breton Giant by “Mr. Gillis” and another unnamed [MTP]. Note: Gillis not in Gribben.

Chris Healy wrote from NYC to Sam. Healy wrote he was an “Irish admirer” who had “traveled 4000 miles mainly to see you,” and requested he call to pay respects. As a boy he was dying in a Liverpool hospital until they gave him a copy of HF to read. Since then he had read most of Twain’s books [MTP].

Loudermilk & Co., Rare books, Wash. D.C. wrote to ask which of his books contained “The Invalid’s Story”? [MTP]. Note: At the top in light ink, “Answd. Nov 26”

Charles W. Stoddard wrote from Monterey, Calif. to Sam. “Dear Mark. / Do you remember Ina Coolbrith, the California poet, Heart’s [sic Harte’s] great friend and mine? / She lost everything she had in the world by that S.F. fire. Her friends here in California are hoping to find a home for her…” and he asked for photographs with autographs that might be auctioned for her benefit [MTP]. Note: Sam wrote on the bottom of the letter “4 of Gessford’s photo”
