June 1 Tuesday — Sam noted in his after Sept, 25, 1909 letter that on this day was the “Discovery of the Blanket Power of Attorney,” referring to the Nov. 14, 1908 document. In the L-A MS, section XVIII, however, he puts the discovery at Monday, May 31. Did the search take two days or one? Sam included in a copy of the document revoking the discovered power of attorney, signed by Clemens and received and recorded by John N. Nickerson, Redding Town Clerk, on June 3. Note: Clemens wasted no time after the the discovery in revoking the power of attorney. Ashcroft had done no real damage, perhaps the Ashcrofts had planned to take over the assets after Clemens’ death.
Booth & Alexander Attorneys in Danbury, Conn wrote to advise Sam: “Our Mr. Alexander has been appointed a commissioner to take your deposition in the case of the Fentress Land Co. et al vs. Bruno Gernt et al, on interrogatories filed by the defendants. We presume you are familiar with the interrogatories, and that your attorney has been over them with you” [MTP]. Note: “ans”
Elizabeth Endicott Young wrote from Dedham, Mass. to ask if it was possible for Sam to come and speak to her club during next winter [MTP]. Note: “Ans’d June 8, ‘09”
