June 14, 1909 Monday

June 14 Monday — In Redding, Conn. Sam wrote to an unidentified man.

Dear Sir: / Yes, I remember it. When I was reading your letter aloud to my daughter this morning & came to your reference to my assembling myself in the port bow, I turned away my head & said “‘I will make a guess at what is coming: those boys are going to chalk me.” My guess was right. I remember the storm, & the water-logged vessel & the gallant rescue vividly. / Truly Yours /... [MTP]. Note. Clemens likely refers to the rescue of nine men from the barque Charles Ward by the Batavia, Nov. 19, 1872. See entry.
