June 12 Saturday - In Redding, Conn. Sam wrote a notecard (2x3 inches), likely a gift enclosure, to Gertrude (probably Natkin): “Dear Gertrude I send you my love. / Mark Twain / June 12/09” [MTP: James Cummins catalog, No. 64, Item 19].
Charles T, Lark, assistant to John B. Stanchfield, attorney, wrote to Albert Bigelow Paine concerning the flight of the Ashcrofts on June 8:
So the soiled birds had flown.
They had reason to be frightened, for, as a precautionary measure, Mr. Lark was intending to ask the district attorney of Twinfield County to place Miss Lyon’s case before the grand juror for said county & let him summon her, the grand juror to proceed whenever he should get further instructions. Nothing further was to be done in this direction until all effort to settle the matter out of court should fail. It was my duty as a citizen to jail Miss Lyon, but she was a woman & the thing was so revolting that my citizenship was hardly equal to it. If it had only been Ashcroft! That would have been another matter, & my citizenship would have stood the strain most elegantly [MTP: L-A MS XXI]
