March 22 Monday — In Redding, Conn. Sam replied to the Mar. 19 from John H. Johnston. “Messages like yours can never lose their value” [MTP: Swann Galleries catalog May 2, 1957, No. 468, Item 317]. °

The Peace Society of NYC per William H. Short wrote to ask Sam to become a life member, since he’d attended the dinner given by it to Senator Root at the Astor a short time ago” [MTP]. Note: IVL: “Declined with thanks,”; the dinner was for Elihu Root, Secretary of State, possibly at Utica, NY on Nov. 1, 1906; see MTE p.61.
